A Toast to Thursday #7

Ahh Thursday, so sweet, so close to the weekend.

Summer beer is here! Yay! This is a new beer for me, but my friend Mindy has been raving about it for the last couple of summers. I am so glad I listened to her; she knows good beer.

Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. This is an excellent summer beer; it tastes like sunshine in a bottle. They describe it as a Weiss beer with lemonade, and that’s exactly what it tastes like. At 4.2 ABV this is a great beer to chill with in the yard in the sunshine. I look forward to enjoying more as the days get sunnier and warmer.

This beer is light in color, and at 130 calories, I’d consider it a light beer.

Because it tastes like sunshine in a bottle; on a scale of 1(Bud Light) to 5, I’d give it a 4.5.

This isn’t actually a toast, but I adore Dorothy Parker:

"If I didn’t care for fun and such,
I’d probably amount to much.
But I shall stay the way I am,
Because I do not give a damn."

Camping Tips

When I was growing up we did not tent camp, it just wasn’t something we did. After Jeremy and I got married, he took me on my first camping trip. We went to what  I now consider a camp site of luxury with things like showers, bathrooms, a picnic table, and one of those great little pads (an area built slightly up from everything else) for your tent.

This is from our first trip, see the pavement and the lovely little lake. Ha, well while we still “car camp” our sites don’t look like this anymore. Things are what they call rustic (i.e. you, the woods, the bears, and peeing outdoors). Now our campsites look more like this:

We left on Thursday afternoon and headed north the White Mountain National Forrest. We were excited, since we hadn’t camped all year, and thought we were all set.

Well we were a bit wrong about some things like having tent poles. Oops . . .

Some creative thinking at least got our tent off the ground enough for sleeping. We had a few other mini set backs the first night like not bring the SD card for the DSLR, an open cooler that also for some reason contained an open ketchup bottle and  fire that would not start. Even though this turned into National Lampoon’s Camping Vacation, it was still so much fun and I would go again in a heart beat.

A few helpful hints if you plan to camp from a series I’ll call “Lessons Learned the Hard Way”:

  1. Make a list and really be thorough add things that seem logical like tent poles
  2. Check said list and have someone else check it too
  3. Make sure your SD card is in your camera not in your computer.
  4. When loading everything in the car make sure the plug to the cooler is closed not open or it will leak everywhere
  5. Just because you have started 100 fires does not mean you will be able to do so after three days of constant rain. Don’t be proud; bring lighter fluid especially if you are relying on this fire for warmth and food.

Up next what to eat while camping and a beautiful hike to a pond. Do you like camping?

To The Virgins. . .

GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying :
And this same flower that smiles to-day
    To-morrow will be dying.
The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
    The higher he’s a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
    And nearer he’s to setting.
That age is best which is the first,
    When youth and blood are warmer ;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
    Times still succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may go marry :
For having lost but once your prime
    You may for ever tarry.
Robert Herrick

Time is still a-flying, flying .

I am a teacher and during the school year, I look more like this. . . weemee And less like this . . .

I’ve mentioned before how I’m incredibly thankful for my summers; they keep me interested in life, searching, learning, and trying new things. My summers are precious to me and while I do spend time on ridiculous things like watching far too much TV, I also try to do other more productive things.

My summer is quickly ending, and I feel like I have all of this unfinished business. I haven’t picked any fruit or veggies (besides from my own garden), which means I haven’t canned anything. There is still a giant stack of books by my bed that need to be read. I still need to hike and camp and eat at least two ‘smores. Surely, there is one more beach day to bask in the glory of the sun and fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean.

So in my truest-to-self fashion, I have made of list of things that I MUST accomplish between now and well next week. I have 7 days to own this summer, and own it I shall.

1. Pick tomatoes and make salsa, can said salsa

2. Go on a camping/hiking trip with Jeremy

3. Read at least two more books (one of which will be Mockingjay)

4. Go to the beach

5. Learn to knit a baby hat (this is scheduled for today)

Of course in addition to all of these things, I really need to hone in more on my classes. I don’t see students for two more weeks, and I have some pretty good plans so far, but there is always more that can be done.

If I’m blogging a bit less the next few weeks, it is because I am out experiencing and blissing out. I need to fuel up for what I’m pretty sure is going to be a trying/exciting year full of countless new things, many of which I hope will be wonderful.

St. Louis in a Night

The gap between posts has been a little long. There was travel and then fun and then I was sick for a day. But now I’m back and ready to pick up where I left off.

Two travel tips: Use Hotwire and Stubhub. Personally, I love a great deal and these two sites never fail me.

After leaving Jeremy’s family in Missouri, we spent a night in St. Louis. It was nice to have one night for us to spend some time together. I got a great deal on a hotel right beside the arch. Thanks Hotwire.

IMG_4005 I love this sink and the little bamboo plant.

After checking in and taking a much needed nap, we walked over to Busch Stadium.  It was an easy, pretty walk.

The game was a blowout. The Cardinals must have had an off night. Since we aren’t Cardinals fans, we still had tons of fun.

Unlike at some stadiums, you can bring in your own snacks and water.

After the game, we went to the Morgan Street Brewery. It was another nice little walk and it was totally empty. When we first arrived, there was one other group but they left and we were the only ones there.

IMG_4051 It was an ok place, but I’ve had better.

We headed back for a good  sleep before flying out to Tennessee.

Early Start

Jeremy and I are off to an early start today; it’s 5am, and we’ve already been up over an hour. We are headed down to Missouri to hang out with his family, and then off to Tennessee to see friends. We did not do a good job of getting to bed early last night, so we each only got an hour or two of sleep. I feel fine right now, but I’m not sure how long that will last.

One of the reasons I got to bed late was finishing the blanket for Jack, which I should have done weeks ago. He’s the one who is also getting the giraffe. This is biggest blanket I’ve ever made about 6 X 4 feet.   It will give him some room to grow.

The theme of Jack’s room is robots. It took me a long time to find friendly, robot material.

I’m blogging from the C&J Trailways bus that we are taking to get to Logan. It’s great, we can leave our car for free and it drops us off right at our terminal. The free wireless is great, but they do have a no cell phone policy which just seems silly, considering that I am typing on my laptop. I could understand if they didn’t want people to “talk”on their phones, but give me a break.

This should be a good trip. We will get to see family, go to an MLB game, and see friends we rarely get to see, plus meet Jack. YAY for summer!

I’ll be blogging intermittently over the next week. Missouri here we come!
