Why walk if you can run?

*Jeremy wanted to drop in for a  guest post. So here he is.

Lately Clarice has been running outside a lot to prepare for races like the April Fool’s Four Miler. One of the routes she has been running is one of my favorite outdoor runs. This is the run “out to Packers Falls.”

I have favorite running routes in every place I have lived. In high school, my favorite long-distance track workout was the run from my high school (in downtown Rochester, NY) over the Genesee River to the Rochester Zoo. In college, I regularly commandeered Arkansas bike trails to meet my running needs. Here, it is no different. The run from Newmarket, NH to Packers Falls (towards Durham) down Packers Falls Road is convenient, full of interesting landmarks that help you keep a good pace, and ends at a scenic, rocky, New England river. This area is also surrounded by nature preserves and recreational areas that require exploration.

In total, the run is about 3 miles. There is a slight incline up to the middle, a slight decline towards the
Falls and then back. Start by walking or jogging to the stretching point.

We walk past the train tracks and into the town cemetery.

While walking through a cemetery may not be the best way to start just about anything, the scenic view of the river can be relaxing. It certainly beats the road.

IMG_7442

We stretch (always stretch well or you’ll end up gimpy with Knee FPS like me!) in a little grassy clearing between the cemetery and Water treatment facility. I don’t think it is actually used anymore. I won’t ask and won’t become concerned.

IMG_7441

Now start running from the river down Packers Falls Road towards Durham.

IMG_7440

Soon, and out of nowhere, you make your way up the windy road to another old gated cemetery. Since we have lived in New Hampshire for a while and realize that at any moment, we may see a tombstone from the 1700’s or a historic marker; we aren’t that curious. Keep running!

IMG_7439

Pass by Little John Road, give a little Oo-de-lally, and keep on your way.

IMG_7436

Next up, on the left, we go past Garrison House Farm where horses are trained to be ridden and people are trained to ride horses. Very often, they will be out riding and sometimes jumping over gates.IMG_7432-1

IMG_7437-1

We are halfway there. Now the long straightaway.

IMG_7431-1

After the straightaway, we hit a few more curves and pass the “Artist’s Yard.”

IMG_7430

The steps say “art is architecture” but don’t really lead anywhere. Certainly better than lawn gnomes
(creepy). But we’re pretty much there.

IMG_7425

Before turning around to go back home, take a minute to enjoy the scenery.

IMG_7420

I am not sure I have had a regular running route that has as much character and scenery as this one. It may be my favorite of all.

Jeremy’s right, this is the best run ever. Thanks for the post Jeremy. Next time you have to edit and insert your own pictures.

Winter Break Goals

Yes, I’m the type of person who makes goals for a vacation. I have so many things that I want to accomplish. Some of them are fun, some are things that just really need to be done.

  1. Read three books (Glass, 1984, and Chocolat)
  2. Clean the fridge
  3. Crochet a hat for my newest cousin and maybe two more for the other two youngest cousins
  4. Finish my light box
  5. Exercise, exercise, exercise
  6. Move the majority of the pictures on my computer to the portable hard drive.
  7. Apply for a few more jobs
  8. Get a hair cut

I think I can get all of these things accomplished.

Jeremy and I went on a walk before the next round of snow rolls in. I took my camera to entertain myself. It’s always funny to me when I take out my camera, on routes we’ve walked a hundred times, that I always notice new things.

Anything, Everything on a Bagel

On the weekends we usually try to have a really nice breakfast. Usually we have weekend coffee (coffee made in the French Press) and bacon & eggs or pancakes. Yesterday though we had something even more special than normal. I used my wonderful bread machine to make homemade Everything bagels.

IMG_6427

These bagels were much easier than I thought they would be and will definitely make them again. I topped the bagels with salt, onion flakes, garlic power, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds. We took our fresh made bagels and make bacon, egg, and provolone sandwiches. It was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a long time.

IMG_6431 After breakfast, which was really more of a brunch, and a nap, we went out for a walk to enjoy the waning, winter sunshine.

I thought that when fall left all of the pretty pictures would be gone, but I was wrong. There are so many new shadows and colors to see this time of year.

We still don’t have any snow here. I think that when it comes it won’t be an inch or two but buckets full. Maybe I’ll get one of those blessed December snow days.

A Starshollow Day

First check out my guest post on Branappetit. Then come back and read this post.

One of my all time favorite TV shows was/is Gilmore Girls. If you never watched, it’s all about a mom, her daughter and their adventures in Starshollow, a small New England town. Before I moved here I thought it was all fictional, but after living in New Hampshire I know it’s not. On Saturday, we had a Starshollow type of day.

First we went to our farmers market.

I wanted eggplant and came home with Italian eggplant. We’ll see how this goes. I have some ideas.

After the farmer’s market, we checked out the festival downtown. There were a few booths but it wasn’t much to speak of. There was also an “oyster festival” i.e. two guys selling oysters. Jeremy and I both tried oysters for the first time and they weren’t that bad. I was surprised by just how salty they were. We shared  a Rope Swing and then headed home for some R&R. Eventually, Jeremy went on a 15 mile bike ride and came home starving. We decided to walk to Rocky’s Famous Burgers. If you live in the seacoast, you MUST eat at Rocky’s.

I’ve been to Rocky’s so many times but this was a  great experience. First we were really hungry. Second Jeremy ordered the Daredevil (“You pick the patty. We pick the toppings! Try at your own risk.” from their menu). He got a crazy huge burger.

IMG_4414

Can you see the burger there under the onion rings, jalapeños, sautéed onions, fresh onions, cheese and pico de gallo?

IMG_4419

Jeremy had no problems. I ordered the same chicken sandwich I always order because that’s just the way I am. While we were ordering our delicious food, someone called in and gave the owner a hard time. See here in New England when you order food a lot of times the super sweet, smiley gal taking your order is the owner. The lady calling in said she didn’t get a patty on her bun and wanted a refund. The owner had put the burger together herself and knew it just wasn’t true. She was very nice and generous to the caller but was really frustrated by the experience.  We commiserated with her about how difficult people can sometimes be. When we were finishing up our meal she brought us over some deep fried Oreos. It was such a sweet gesture and a stuffed Jeremy managed to find some extra room.

IMG_4424

Thanks for a great dinner Rocky’s. We walked back through town to find a Beatles cover band rocking it out. If you’ve never sat with your neighbors and sang along to some of the best music of all time, you just haven’t lived.

Saturday was just another day that lets me know it’s going to be really hard to leave New England.

Monsoon Monday

We may not have had a lot of snow this winter, but the wind and rain have totally pummeled us this Spring.  First two weeks ago, we had an extreme wind storm with flooding. Now, this weekend the rain just won’t stop.  We didn’t have school again today. It’s going to be so hot when we finally get out.  Jeremy is on spring break so we were able to go to the gym together in the middle of the day. It was nice and empty, and we both got really good workouts.  This has been my uniform for the last few days. Yep, my boots rock; I got them at a feed store a few years ago. I like to refer to them as my classic Wellies.

I’m not sure if we’re going to have school tomorrow  or how I’m going to get there. There are tons of  roads closed ,and I don’t know when the flooding will go down.  Jeremy and I went into town to eat, and I took some video of the dam. I may have broken the rules a little by walking under this yellow tape. 100_0443

Our landlord said the town is afraid the dam might break.

*I’ve been fighting to get a video uploaded for an hour; now I am officially quitting. Seriously Youtube can you really not take MOV format.

I finally got it. My Word
