As an English teacher and former English major specific words have multiple meanings for me; even when writing an email I will stop and use a thesaurus because choosing words is important to me. I labored for days over a title for this blog, scouring websites, dictionaries, and books. Finally, I turned to my giant book of American poetry and came up with this.
From The Oxford Book of American Poetry 2006.
Luck
By Langston HughesSometimes a crumb falls
from the tables of joy,
Sometimes a bone
Is flung.To some people
Love is given,
To others
Only heaven.
I love how simply the imagery of this poem illustrates that a lot of life is chance, and you have to make of it what you will.
